Product Description
Socks Knitted in King Cole Footsie 4ply
What is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern from King Cole provides instructions for knitting a pair of socks using King Cole Footsie 4ply yarn. The pattern includes two distinct designs, offering knitters options for creating stylish, wearable sock projects. These are accessory items suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a satisfying small-scale knitting project.
Yarn and Materials
The socks are designed specifically for King Cole Footsie 4ply yarn, a lightweight four-ply weight yarn ideal for creating well-fitted, comfortable socks. The pattern requires 3.25mm knitting needles for achieving the correct gauge. The 4ply weight ensures fine, detailed stitch definition while maintaining durability for frequently-worn sock garments.
Tension and Gauge
Proper tension is essential for sock fit and comfort. The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches and 36 rounds/rows to 10cm (4 inches) worked over stocking stitch on 3.25mm needles. Knitters are strongly advised to knit a tension square before beginning the socks. If your tension produces fewer stitches per 10cm than specified, switch to finer needles; if it produces more stitches, use larger needles to ensure the finished socks fit correctly.
Stitches and Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques:
- Stocking Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to form the smooth, classic sock fabric
- Knit Stitch (K): Basic knit stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches for stitch pattern variation
- Cable Stitches: The pattern includes cable techniques such as C4B (Cable 4 Back) and C4F (Cable 4 Front), which involve slipping stitches onto a cable needle, leaving them at the back or front of work, then knitting stitches and returning to the cable needle. These create decorative twisted rope-like textures
- Slip Stitches (sl, sl 1P): Slipping stitches purlwise for edge definition and pattern transitions
- Yarn Forward (yfwd): Used to create eyelet holes and lace effects
- Pass Slipped Stitch Over (psso): A decrease technique for shaping
- Knit Together (tog): Additional decrease method for shaping the sock
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized with clear abbreviations and special instructions to guide knitters through the construction. Two design variations are provided within the single PDF, allowing knitters to choose their preferred style. The use of rounds (indicated in the tension gauge) suggests these socks are likely worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, a traditional method for seamless sock construction.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and are comfortable working with cable techniques. The combination of stocking stitch, cable work, and potential shaping makes this suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginner level.

Just finished knitting the socks. They look good, am wondering how much stretch there is after blocking. Feels different than yarn containing wool.
