Samantha Jumper – 2 Colour Fairisle Knitting Pattern by Willow & Lark

The Samantha Jumper is a women's stranded colourwork knitting pattern from Willow & Lark's Wilderness Collection, designed to be worked in Willow & Lark Woodland DK yarn. Featuring a striking arrow motif in classic two-colour Fairisle style, this intermediate-level pattern offers knitters a fresh and contemporary take on a beloved traditional technique. One of its most appealing design features is the flexibility to wear the colourway either way: light on a darker background or dark on a lighter background, giving the finished garment a completely different character depending on your colour preference.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a women's fitted jumper (sweater) with set-in or structured sleeves, worked to fit bust sizes ranging from 81 cm to 107 cm (32–42 in), with actual garment measurements of 87 cm to 115 cm (34¼–45¼ in) at the bust. The body length to shoulder ranges from 55 cm to 60 cm (21¾–23¾ in), and the sleeve seam measures 46 cm to 48 cm (18–19 in) depending on size. This is a wearable, everyday garment with a classic silhouette elevated by bold colourwork patterning.

Techniques Used

  • Stranded colourwork (Fairisle): The defining technique of this pattern. Two colours of yarn are carried across each row, with the unused colour stranded loosely across the wrong side of the fabric. This creates the characteristic arrow motif that runs across the jumper's body and sleeves.
  • Bottom-up construction: The jumper is worked from the cast-on edge at the hem upward toward the shoulders, which is a traditional and intuitive construction method that allows knitters to try on the garment as they go.
  • Worked flat (seamed): The pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, meaning the front, back, and sleeves are worked as separate flat panels and then seamed together. This is a classic construction approach well-suited to Fairisle knitting, as it allows the knitter to always work from the right side when reading colourwork charts.
  • Seaming: Once all pieces are complete, they are joined using seaming techniques to assemble the finished jumper. This creates a structured, tailored finish and adds durability to the garment.

Stitches Used

  • Stranded colourwork stitches: The arrow Fairisle motif is worked in standard knit stitches across the right side, carrying two colours simultaneously.
  • Ribbing: Typically used at the hem, cuffs, and neckband in Fairisle jumpers of this style to provide elasticity and a neat, professional finish at the edges.
  • Stocking stitch (stockinette): The main fabric of the jumper is worked in stocking stitch, which provides a smooth, flat surface ideal for showcasing colourwork motifs.

Materials – Yarn

The pattern is designed specifically for Willow & Lark Woodland, a DK weight yarn with a luxurious fibre blend of 50% Wool, 25% Alpaca, and 25% Viscose, available in 50g/1.7oz balls. This blend combines the warmth and elasticity of wool with the softness and halo of alpaca, while the viscose adds a subtle drape and sheen that makes the colourwork motifs appear crisp and vivid.

The pattern offers two suggested colourway combinations:

  • Primary colourway: Heather 422 as Colour A (2–3 balls depending on size) and Black 403 as Colour B (4–6 balls depending on size)
  • Alternative colourway: Plover Grey 400 as Colour A and Juniper Berry 419 as Colour B

Colour A is used in smaller quantities as the contrast or highlight colour, while Colour B forms the dominant background or main body of
