Men's Aran Sweater by Isle of Yarn Knitwear Design

Project Overview

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a men's Aran sweater designed by Isle of Yarn Knitwear Design. The sweater features traditional Celtic cable patterns and is worked primarily in the round, making it an ideal intermediate-level project for knitters looking to expand their skills with textured stitch work. The design offers three finished sizes—Small (37" chest), Medium (40" chest), and Large (45" chest)—with recommended positive ease of 1–2 inches for comfortable wear.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool in the colorway 'Nature'. Fisherman's Wool is a worsted-weight yarn known for its durability and traditional appeal, making it an excellent choice for classic Aran sweater construction. The yarn weight classification is Aran/Worsted, which provides good stitch definition for showcasing the intricate cable patterns.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires two different needle sizes to achieve proper fabric structure and fit:

  • Main Fabric Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles, 32–40 inches / 80–100 cm in length, plus needles for your preferred method of small circumference knitting for the body and sleeves
  • Ribbing Needles: US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles, 32–40 inches / 80–100 cm in length, plus needles for small circumference knitting for the collar and cuffs (alternatively, one US 3 circular needle and enough double-pointed needles to pick up 96 stitches for a 3-needle bind-off)

The three-size needle difference between main fabric and ribbing ensures that the ribbed sections have appropriate elasticity and definition while the main cable patterns remain properly proportioned.

Gauge and Blocking

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches / 10 cm when working the Celtic cable pattern in the round on the main fabric needles, measured after blocking. Proper blocking is particularly important for Aran sweaters, as it helps even out the textured cables and ensures the finished measurements are accurate.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern centers on Celtic cable patterns, which are hallmark stitches of traditional Aran knitting. Cables are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another, producing raised, twisted textures that add visual interest and depth to the fabric. The pattern is worked in the round, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. Working in the round also allows for continuous pattern repeats, which is particularly effective for showcasing cable designs.

In addition to cables, the sweater incorporates ribbed sections at the collar, cuffs, and hem. Ribbing is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in vertical columns, producing a stretchy, fitted fabric that helps the sweater maintain its shape and provides comfortable, snug edges.

Construction Method

The sweater is constructed using circular needles throughout, with the body and sleeves worked in the round on the larger needles and the ribbed sections (collar and cuffs) worked on the smaller needles. This construction method is efficient and produces minimal seaming, resulting in a polished, wearable garment.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides three finished chest circumferences: Small (37 inches / 94 cm), Medium (40 inches / 101.5 cm), and Large (45 inches / 114.5 cm). The recommended positive ease is 1–2 inches / 2.5–5 cm, meaning the finished garment should measure 1–2 inches larger than the wearer's actual chest measurement for comfortable movement. The modeled sweater shown is a size Medium with 2 inches of positive ease, designed to fit a 38-inch chest.
