This Heirloom Christening Shawl knitting pattern by Debbie Bliss produces a breathtaking, approximately 132cm/52in square lace shawl designed as a treasured keepsake for a baby's christening or naming ceremony. The finished dimensions depend on how firmly the shawl is blocked, making the blocking process an essential and integral part of achieving the final drape and stitch definition. This is an advanced-level knitting pattern offered as a downloadable PDF, ideal for experienced knitters who wish to create a truly heirloom-quality piece.
The pattern creates a single-size, large square christening shawl suitable for wrapping a newborn or infant. As both a blanket or throw and a shawl or wrap, it serves as a ceremonial garment with lasting sentimental value. The generous 132cm square dimensions make it practical as well as beautiful, offering full coverage for a baby while showcasing intricate lace and textural stitch patterns throughout.
The pattern calls for a tension of 28 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm/4in square over Pattern A after blocking, using 3.5mm (US 4) needles. Achieving accurate tension after blocking is particularly important for lace knitting, as the wet-blocking process opens up the lace motifs and sets the final fabric dimensions. Knitters are encouraged to swatch and block their gauge square before beginning the main project.
This pattern draws on a rich variety of knitting techniques, reflecting its advanced difficulty level:
The pattern employs a wide range of stitches and techniques, making it a genuinely complex and rewarding knit. Key stitches and constructions include:

Knitted this several times my favourite baby shawl -so glad I found this pattern as I have lost the pattern my Gran gave me about 30 years ago
Very pleased with everything I have ordered from you
Beautiful pattern but not the clearest and the pattern photos aren't very clear. Still not too sure I'm doing the 9/3 increase correctly but I'm managing
I'm an experienced knitter but found this pattern extremely difficult to understand
I have not tried this pattern yet but have looked through and looking forward to using this kind of cast on (never tried this one)
Lovely pattern, not nearly as daunting as it appears - instructions are very clear.
Knits beautifully without splitting
Good quality easy to follow patern
