Product Description
The Garden Party Bowler works up easily, and the Bowler is worked in continuous round, so adding or decreasing length is very simple. I have found that #1 weight yarn, with 1 strand of Aunt Lydia's #10 Classic Thread works and looks awesome for this pattern and helps give it great structure. I have given suggestions on some other yarn in the pattern.

Garden Party Bowler by Blu Daisy Creations
Project Overview
The Garden Party Bowler is a beginner-friendly crochet hat pattern designed by Sweet Hues/Blu Daisy Creations. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a structured bowler-style hat using lightweight cotton materials and fundamental crochet techniques. The design emphasizes proper fit and structure through careful gauge work and measurement checks throughout the construction process.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a classic bowler hat with a defined crown and structured sides. The hat is worked in continuous rounds from the top down, allowing crafters to try on the piece as they progress and ensure proper fit before completing the final sections.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Garden Party Bowler employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern utilizes the Magic Loop method to begin working in the round, eliminating the need for a traditional slip knot foundation. The hat is constructed using continuous rounds rather than joining rounds, which creates a seamless appearance and maintains consistent tension throughout the piece. Crafters are instructed to check measurements during the increase section to ensure proper shaping and fit.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH) – The foundational stitch used for creating loops and edges
- Crossed Single Crochet Stitch (CSC) – A decorative and structural stitch that adds texture and definition to the hat
- Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) – A post stitch that creates dimensional texture by working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops
Materials and Tools
The Garden Party Bowler is designed to work with lightweight cotton yarns and threads. The pattern specifies use of Aunt Lydia's Classic 10 Cotton Thread, which is a #1 weight thread. For optimal structure and the intended firm finish, the designer recommends using one strand of #1 weight yarn held together with one strand of the cotton thread. Alternatively, testers successfully used three strands of Aunt Lydia's Classic 10 Cotton Thread held together. For a lighter, less structured bowler, crafters may substitute with #1 cotton yarn alone or a #2 firm cotton yarn.
Essential tools include a 3.75 mm crochet hook, a measure tape for checking dimensions, a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds, scissors, and a small yarn needle for weaving in ends. A gauge swatch is required before beginning the main project—crafters should work Rounds 1 through 5 of the pattern to measure a 4.5 cm diameter circle, then continue checking measurements throughout the increase section to guarantee proper fit.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or those looking to practice fundamental stitches and techniques. The straightforward construction method and clear measurement guidelines support successful completion by crafters at various skill levels.
