Product Description

These fun little socks have a sweet heart cable pattern running up the outer half of each foot. The adorable cable pattern is interesting and fun to knit, but is simple enough not to get lost in a beautiful variegated yarn. These socks are knit toe up, with a German short row toe and heel. I have made mine ankle height, but they could easily be made taller. This pattern is written for magic loop, but is simple to change if you prefer a different method. The cable pattern is both written and charted.

For the Love of Sherbet Socks by Jordan Prouty

What is Being Made

For the Love of Sherbet is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks featuring a decorative heart cable design. The socks are designed in three sizes with finished circumferences of 7 inches, 8 inches, and 9 inches (18, 20, and 23 centimeters). While the pattern is written for ankle height, the design can be easily modified to create taller sock lengths according to knitter preference. The heart cable pattern runs along the outer half of each foot, creating visual interest and a charming aesthetic.

Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques. The socks are constructed using the toe-up method, beginning at the foot and working toward the cuff. Both the toe and heel are shaped using the German short row technique, which creates smooth, fitted shaping without visible gaps or holes. The pattern is written for the magic loop method, a circular knitting technique that uses a single long circular needle to work small circumferences. However, the straightforward construction allows knitters to easily adapt the pattern to alternative methods if preferred, such as double-pointed needles or two circular needles.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the smooth, classic sock fabric. The defining feature of the pattern is the heart cable motif, which runs up the outer half of each foot. Cable stitches create raised, twisted patterns through crossing groups of stitches over one another. The pattern description notes that the cable design is interesting and engaging to knit while remaining simple enough not to become confusing when worked in variegated yarn, making it suitable for intermediate knitters.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for approximately 200 yards (185 meters) for the smallest size, 230 yards (210 meters) for the medium size, and 265 yards (245 meters) for the largest size of fingering weight yarn. The sample socks were knit using Knitologie Cozy Sock yarn in the colorway Citrus Squeeze, which is composed of 75% Superwash Merino Wool, 15% Nylon, and 10% Cashmere, with a yardage of 439 yards per 100 grams.

Essential tools include Size 1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches (100 centimeters) in length for the magic loop method, or needles in the appropriate size to meet the specified gauge. Additional supplies needed are a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished sock circumferences and ensuring proper fit. Knitters should swatch before beginning to verify their gauge with their chosen yarn and needles.
