Product Description

Full Disclosure: You must be able to read charts for this pattern. It's my first pattern. I knit this sweater in the x-small size. I did math to upsize this sweater. Also, I knit this in a heavy yarn because I live in a cold place.

Tips: Sweater charts start on Wrong Side. This pattern is 17 pages. There are certain parts of the charts that are in color for ease of use. So print the pattern in color or review the pattern pdf on your computer prior to knitting.

Fireside Sweater by Amber Allison

What is Being Made

The Fireside Sweater is a shawl-collared cabled cardigan designed by independent designer Amber Allison. This knitted garment features a distinctive overlapping center cable that extends through a dramatic shawl collar, creating a sophisticated and cozy layering piece. The cardigan is available in four finished bust sizes: 30 inches (x-small), 34 inches (small), 38 inches (medium), and 42 inches (large), making it suitable for a range of body types.

Design Features and Construction

The Fireside Sweater showcases thoughtful cable placement throughout its construction. The overlapping center cable serves as the focal point, running continuously from the body through the dramatic shawl collar for visual continuity. Smaller accent cables positioned along the sides complement the larger central cables, which frame the button and buttonhole placements. This strategic cable arrangement creates both textural interest and functional design elements that guide the eye down the front of the cardigan.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs cable knitting as its primary stitch technique. The pattern utilizes multiple cable variations in different scales—larger cables in the center and smaller cables along the sides—requiring knitters to work with cable crosses and manipulation. The shawl collar construction adds complexity to the project, as it requires shaping and integration with the main cable pattern. Knitters will also work buttonholes into the pattern as functional design elements.

Materials and Tools

The Fireside Sweater calls for Valley Yarns Berkshire, a blend of 85% wool and 15% alpaca that provides warmth and softness appropriate for a fireside garment. Yardage requirements vary by size: 1,269 yards for x-small (9 balls), 1,410 yards for small (10 balls), 1,692 yards for medium (12 balls), and 1,833 yards for large (13 balls). Each ball weighs 100 grams and contains 141 yards. The pattern is worked on Size 10 (6.00 mm) circular or straight needles, with the specific needle choice left flexible based on individual gauge. Knitters will also need waste yarn for various pattern techniques and buttons appropriate for the cardigan's front closure.

Pattern Format

The Fireside Sweater is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The pattern includes detailed instructions for all four sizes and was originally published on January 31, 2010.

Very poor quality knitting pattern bought.

I downloaded the pattern which was spread over 17 pages due to the numerous gaps in the layout. I attempted to copy the pattern in order to close up the gaps but was unable to do so. Very poor quality. I will not be using it, it is not worth the paper I would need to print it off.

Badly written pattern - a mass of pictures and slang language - no real pattern guide and actually quite difficult to understand - I am an experienced knitter and found this pattern almost beyond my capabilities - a bad purchase

Pattern found.

It is a beautiful garment, but not easy to sort out the beginning of knitting the pattern owing to starting reading it from left to right, and starting the cable. I am experienced in cable patterns, but this one is not easy. I prefer the row by row instructions as written in British patterns. I will persevere but do not recommend for any but experienced knitters.
