Sirdar pattern 3102 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern offering three classic baby and toddler cardigan designs, all worked in Sirdar Supersoft Baby DK yarn. The pattern covers six sizes ranging from 0–3 months up to 5–6 years, making it a versatile choice for knitters who want a go-to cardigan pattern that grows with the child. The three designs included are a Round Neck Cardigan with Ribbed Edge, a Round Neck Cardigan with Bell Edge, and a V Neck Cardigan, each offering a subtly different look while sharing the same straightforward construction approach.
The pattern is written to fit chest measurements from 41 cm (16 in) to 66 cm (26 in), with actual garment measurements ranging from 46 cm (18 in) to 71 cm (28 in), providing a comfortable amount of positive ease typical for children's knitwear. Full lengths range from 24 cm (9½ in) for the smallest size up to 42 cm (16½ in) for the largest. Sleeve lengths run from 15 cm (6 in) to 33 cm (13 in) and are noted as adjustable, which is a practical feature allowing knitters to customise the fit for individual children.
This is a timeless, neat cardigan featuring a classic round neckline finished with a ribbed edging. Ribbing is a fundamental knitting technique that creates a stretchy, tidy border and is worked by alternating knit and purl stitches in a set sequence — most commonly knit 1, purl 1 or knit 2, purl 2 — which causes the fabric to draw in and spring back elastically. This makes it ideal for neckbands, cuffs, and button bands on children's garments where durability and comfort are important. The button band on this version requires 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, or 7 buttons depending on the size being knitted.
This design shares the same round neck shaping as the ribbed version but replaces the standard ribbed borders with a decorative bell edge. A bell edge is a pretty, slightly flared trim that adds a delicate, feminine detail to the hem, cuffs, and neckband. It is created by working increases or by casting on additional stitches to produce a gentle ruffle or flare effect before the main body fabric begins. This detail makes the garment particularly appealing as a gift or special occasion piece. Like the ribbed version, this cardigan uses 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, or 7 buttons.
The V Neck Cardigan offers a slightly more tailored, grown-up silhouette within the same pattern booklet. The V-neck shaping requires careful decrease work on either side of the front opening to create the characteristic angled neckline. This version uses a 3¼ mm circular needle (if required) for picking up and working the neckband neatly around the V-shaped opening — a common technique that allows knitters to work a smooth, continuous band without seams. The V Neck version requires slightly fewer buttons: 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, or 5 depending on size.
All three cardigans are primarily constructed in stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which is the most widely used knitting fabric, created by knitting every right-side row and purling every wrong-side row. This produces a smooth, flat fabric on the knit side and a textured, bumpy surface on the purl side. Stocking stitch is ideal for children's garments as it is comfortable against the skin and shows off the softness of a quality DK yarn beautifully.

Review summary
Most reviewers say the pattern is clear and easy to follow, and many praise the quick download. Some find the printed pages small, hard to read or hard to print, and a few would rather have a printed copy posted. Complaints are uncommon.

Clear pattern layout and I love the online tools for working with the pattern, row marker etc
Pattern looks good reads well have not knitted it yet. Have knitted other Sirdar patterns without issues
The pattern is easy to read and I am currently using at the moment. Covering a wide range of sizes means I can make a cardigan for each of the grandchildren. One negative point of downloading is that as you print on paper the pattern is easily torn and gets scrunched up in the bag unlike a brought copy, positive point is that it is always in 'my library' so I can reprint at any time.
Lovely pattern, easy to follow and similar to those knitted for me by my Nana's! Pleased to knit them now I am a Nana!

Excellent service, download was instant so I could start knitting straight away.
Lovely pattern. Nice clear print in a good size with row by row instructions. But could do with more space or definition between rows
