There can be nothing cosier than a warm, soft Christmas blanket to snuggle up with on a cold Winter’s day, and with it’s colourful candy canes and bright red pompoms this matching blanket and cushion set will have you feeling festive in no time at all.
The pattern for the blanket and cushion is perfect for all crochet abilities as the only two stitches used are dc (UK terms) and chain. The blanket is worked in rows of dc and the candy canes, rather than being worked in rounds, are simply small crocheted rectangles in dc, which are then rolled up and stitched in to place, with the stripe being created by wrapping a length of chain stitch around the cane. The candy canes and snowflakes are then stitched in to place on to the finished blanket. It really is as simple as that !
I used PAINTBOX Wool Mix Aran for the main part of my blanket but PAINTBOX Simply Aran could also be used for a cheaper option.

This downloadable crochet pattern by Kate Eastwood creates a festive matching set comprising a warm Christmas blanket and coordinating cushion. The design features colorful candy cane motifs and bright red pompoms, making it an ideal project for creating cozy seasonal home décor. The pattern is specifically designed to be accessible to crocheters of all skill levels, including beginners.
This pattern employs straightforward crochet construction methods suitable for beginners. The blanket is worked primarily in rows using basic stitching techniques. The candy canes are created as small crocheted rectangles rather than worked in the round, which simplifies the construction process. These rectangles are then rolled up to form three-dimensional candy cane shapes and stitched securely into place on the finished blanket. Striping on the candy canes is achieved by wrapping chain stitch lengths around each cane. The snowflakes and candy canes are subsequently stitched onto the completed blanket base.
This pattern is worked using Aran weight yarn, which provides a warm, substantial fabric ideal for a cozy blanket. The designer used PAINTBOX Wool Mix Aran for the main blanket construction. The pattern notes that PAINTBOX Simply Aran could also be used as a more economical alternative. A crochet hook appropriate for Aran weight yarn is required, along with a yarn needle for stitching the appliqués and pompoms into place.
Rated as a beginner project, this pattern requires only two fundamental crochet stitches, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or seeking a straightforward seasonal project. The simple stitch palette and logical construction sequence ensure accessibility without compromising on festive visual impact.
