Product Description

Love this easy to wear wide pullover! I designed a new (at least to me!) basketweave stitch pattern and found this rendition very appealing. The fabric created by combining my Shaman and Affetto Seta is both soft but stable enough to showcase the ton-i-ton depth of the color and the stitch pattern. Want to substitute? Pretty much any yarn that knits up pleasantly at 18 sts / 4"!

Betsy B Pullover by Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton

What Is Being Made

The Betsy B Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by independent designer Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton. This is an oversized pullover available in four sizes: Small (width 40"), Medium (46"), Large (52"), and Extra Large (58"). The garment features a relaxed, comfortable fit with lengths ranging from 18.25" to 20.5" depending on size. The pullover is ideal for those seeking a contemporary, easy-wearing knit with visual texture and depth.

Techniques and Construction

The Betsy B Pullover is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner to intermediate knitters. The design employs a straightforward approach with minimal shaping, making it an accessible project for those new to garment construction. The pattern uses 11.5 to 13 pattern repeats depending on size, worked until the piece reaches the desired length. The designer recommends placing a marker at the beginning of right-side rows to assist with row counting, a helpful technique for tracking progress through the repetitive pattern work.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The pattern incorporates a basketweave stitch pattern that adds visual interest and texture to the finished garment. This combination of fundamental stitches makes the project manageable for knitters developing their skills while still producing a sophisticated, textured result.

Yarn and Materials

The Betsy B Pullover is worked with two yarns held together throughout, creating a thicker, more substantial fabric. The original design calls for specific CTH Yarns products:

  • Shaman in Burgundy colorway from CTH Yarns (approximately 350 meters per 50g hank): 3 to 5 hanks depending on size
  • Affetto Seta in Hibiscus Red colorway from CTH Yarns (approximately 240 meters per 50g hank): 4 to 5 hanks depending on size

The pattern is classified as aran weight yarn, and knitters may substitute any yarn that achieves the correct gauge. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch with yarns held double. This gauge specification ensures proper fit and drape of the finished garment.

Needles and Tools

The Betsy B Pullover requires US 8 (5 mm) needles or whatever size is necessary to obtain the specified gauge. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct tension, as gauge is critical for proper fit in this oversized design. A stitch marker is recommended for tracking row progression through the pattern repeats.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle their first pullover. The straightforward construction, minimal shaping, and repetitive pattern work build confidence while producing a wearable, fashionable garment. The oversized fit provides forgiving dimensions that accommodate variations in tension and technique.
